The 100ml liquids rule for hand luggage, explained

At security, most travellers trip over the same thing: liquids. The rule is simple, but the details cost people their favourite bottle every day. Here's how to sail through.

The core: 100ml and one clear bag

The standard rule at most airports:

• Each liquid in a container of no more than 100ml.
• All containers together in one resealable clear bag of about 1 litre.
• One bag per person, taken out separately at the check.

It's about the container size, not how much is inside. A half-empty 200ml bottle is not allowed, even with only 50ml in it.

What counts as a "liquid"?

More than you'd think: water and drinks, but also toothpaste, roll-on deodorant, gel, cream, mascara, liquid foundation, sunscreen and yoghurt. When in doubt, treat it as a liquid.

Exceptions

• Medication and baby food are allowed in larger amounts — declare them at the check.
• Some airports with modern CT scanners have relaxed the 100ml rule, but don't count on it: it varies by airport and can change day to day. Assume 100ml and you're always fine.
